FA internal elections a boon for the Vázquez government

Javier Miranda will take over as the new president of Uruguay’s ruling left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition on 3 September. Miranda’s triumph in internal party presidential elections held on 24 July provided a fillip for President Tabaré Vázquez and his besieged economy and finance minister, Danilo Astori. Miranda was backed by the moderate wing of the FA, which is supportive of the austerity measures being driven through by Astori.
