Military disquiet over pension reform

Uruguay’s ruling left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition lost a stalwart to the cause on 5 August, when the veteran defence minister, Eleuterio Fernández Huidobro, passed away after a struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fernández Huidobro’s successor, Jorge Menéndez, who had served as his deputy, faces the immediate challenge of placating the armed forces who are deeply disillusioned with the proposed reform of the Caja Militar, the military pension scheme, proposed by the economy and finance minister, Danilo Astori.
