Paraguay’s President Horacio Cartes marked the end of his third year in office and the start of the fourth of the single five-year term this month. But rather than being greeted by celebrations, the occasion was marked by a large anti-government demonstration in the capital, Asunción, organised by the Congreso Democrático del Pueblo (CDP) grouping of leftist political organisations. This appears to be symptomatic of the growing general disappointment with the Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) administration led by Cartes and its failure to achieve the lofty goals that Cartes set himself when he assumed office in 2013.
