NICARAGUA: Nicaragua’s police chief confirmed in her role

Last month President Daniel Ortega announced that national police (PNN) chief Aminta Granera would remain in her role. Granera has been in the post since 2006 – the year that President Ortega’s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) won the election returning it to office. Granera’s continuance in the post – which follows a September 2011 decree extending her mandate for an unspecified period and subsequent 2014 legislation making the PNN chief directly answerable to the president –remains controversial. It has boosted existing concerns regarding the PNN’s independence. It also comes as President Ortega has been forced onto the defensive over security – a key factor contributing to his enduring popularity ahead of the November 2016 general elections, in which he is widely expected to secure a third consecutive re-election.
