Panama’s Varela hails “historic deal” over Barro Blanco dam

Development: On 22 August the local media reported that Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela was briefly taken hostage by indigenous activists during the signing of an agreement between the government and leaders from the Ngäbe Buglé indigenous comarca (indigenous political administrative region) regarding the ‘Barro Blanco’ hydroelectric dam located in the area.
