Electricaribe’s problems come to a head

Residents of Colombia’s seven departments with a Caribbean coast are up in arms against Electrificadora del Caribe (Electricaribe), the private firm in charge of distributing electricity to the area. After months of rolling blackouts they have taken to the streets in some of the area’s main cities to protest against Electricaribe’s poor service. This has led the Caribbean coast departmental governors to call on the central government to intervene, and if necessary take over control of Electricaribe from Gas Natural Fenosa (GNF), the Spanish firm that currently owns it. GNF itself has called for dialogue with the government led by President Juan Manuel Santos in order to find a solution to the problem, upping the pressure on the Santos administration to act in order to resolve the various problems faced by Electricaribe.
