Peña Nieto faces popularity problems in final stretch

Entering into the fourth year of his single six-year term, Enrique Peña Nieto’s approval ratings are currently the lowest for any Mexican head of state for the past 21 years. This is a problem for the president as much as it is for the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI). Peña Nieto is more unpopular than his last two PRI predecessors but also more so than his two immediate predecessors from the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and this bodes ill for the final two years of his term and for the PRI ahead of the 2018 general elections.
