Olympic repercussions for Peña Nieto

To compound President Enrique Peña Nieto’s domestic political problems and further damage his declining personal popularity, Mexico underperformed in this year’s Summer Olympic Games hosted by the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro last month. One of Peña Nieto’s closest associates, Alfredo Castillo, the head of Mexico’s sports commission (Conade), came in for an avalanche of criticism as a result of the poor showing by Mexico, which won just five medals and not a single gold, below Brazil, Cuba, Colombia and Argentina in the region.
