Medina focuses on public security and healthcare at start of second term

Following his re-election in the Dominican Republic (DR)’s May general elections, President Danilo Medina officially began his second four-year term on 16 August. In his inauguration speech, Medina pledged that in his second term, his administration would continue implementing policies aimed at tackling economic inequalities and underdevelopment. While he outlined the government policies that his new cabinet is to pursue in order to achieve these objectives, it is clear that the immediate focus will be on improving public security and healthcare provision. These are the two areas that top the public’s concerns and in which, in its first mandate, the Medina administration is perceived to have underperformed.
