HAITI: UN makes key admission

A “ground-breaking first step towards justice” is how international human rights organisation the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti (IJDH) described remarks by Farhan Haq, a United Nations (UN) spokesperson who last month recognised the need for the UN to do “much more regarding its own involvement in the [2010 cholera] outbreak and the suffering of those affected by cholera”. Haq’s comments, which he made on 18 August, signal the first time in six years that the UN has acknowledged responsibility for the outbreak which reports have long suggested was introduced by Nepalese peacekeepers from the UN stabilisation force in Haiti (Minustah) [RC-11-09].
