Caribbean & Central America - September 2016 (ISSN 1741-4458)

Last month, the first meeting took place in Costa Rica’s capital, San José, of members of the Parliamentary Fronts Against Hunger (FPH in the Spanish acronym) from Colombia and Mesoamerica (Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic). The meeting was to discuss a joint agenda with regard to legislative efforts to eradicate hunger and address food insecurity – the declared aim of FPHs which emerged in 2009 with the support of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). As one of the areas most exposed and vulnerable to climate change, Central America continues to suffer the effect of drought and erratic rainfall due to the El Niño climatic phenomenon, and the need to address food insecurity remains as pressing as ever.
