Region: New approaches to violent cities
The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean suffer from a particularly acute problem: violent cities. According to the World Bank, around 400 people are murdered every day in the region, about one every 14 minutes, and most of them are killed in cities. On one estimate, 42 of the world’s 50 most violent cities are located in the region. Latin America has the world’s highest homicide rate – an average of 24.7 per 100,000 inhabitants per annum (the World Health Organisation considers anything above 10 per 100,000 as being of epidemic proportions). On the plus side, however, some cities are showing that there are policies that can reduce violence and improve safety.
