Definitive peace between the Colombian government and the country’s largest guerrilla group could be just days away. Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos and the maximum leader of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc), ‘Timochenko’ (Rodrigo Londoño Echeverri), have agreed to meet on 26 September to sign a final peace accord, after the government and guerrilla negotiating teams reached agreement on the outstanding issues in Cuba on 24 August. It will then be up to the Colombian people to decide whether the peace envisaged in the final accord is one they are prepared to accept in a referendum on 2 October. Opinion polls have shown significant volatility in recent months but are now leaning towards a victory for the ‘yes’ camp.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1844 words.
