Panama: Boosting cooperation with a key ally

President Juan Carlos Varela recently announced plans to set up a special group with his Colombian peer, Juan Manuel Santos, to monitor the peace process between the Colombian government and Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group. Varela’s 7 September announcement reflects concerns previously raised by his government that the peace agreement could result in a rise in cross border drug trafficking, as guerrilla groups opposed to an accord could increase their illegal activities.
