Yasuní exploitation begins

Vice-President Jorge Glas announced on 7 September that oil production had begun at the so-called ‘Block 43’ oil well, which forms part of the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) field located in the Yasuní national park, a biosphere reserve in Ecuador’s Amazon area. Exploitation of the ITT is very controversial given the flagship campaign proposal to protect this environmental sanctuary by the ruling Alianza País (AP) in 2007.
