A report presented last month by the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Latin America & Caribbean (Eclac); UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); and Latin American Integration Association (Aladi) warned of the negative impact of climate change on crop yields and local economies in Latin America. Entitled “Food and Nutrition Security and the Eradication of Hunger”, the report singles out parts of the Andean region in particular as areas where climate change is expected to impact crop yields and local economies, and compromise food security due to economic dependence on agriculture, the low adaptive capability of the population and geographical location.
