Luis Videgaray Caso has stepped down from his position as the head of Mexico’s finance ministry (SHCP). The departure of the man considered to be the ministerial cabinet’s ‘strong man’, President Enrique Peña Nieto’s right-hand man, confidante, and potential successor, has come as a surprise. Yet Videgaray appears to have paid the price for Mexico’s underwhelming economic performance under Peña Nieto and for being behind the highly controversial decision to invite the US Republican Party presidential candidate, Donald Trump, to meet with Peña Nieto [RM-16-09].
