Church caught up in violence

The murder of three Catholic priests in the space of a few days in late September caused consternation, reinforcing the perception that the violence in Mexico spares no-one. Two priests were murdered in the state of Veracruz and one in the state of Michoacán, both states renowned for high levels of organised crime and violence. Preliminary investigations into their murders prompted fierce criticism of the government by the archdiocese of Mexico.
