Poverty figures back in the spotlight

After years of not releasing any official poverty data, Argentina’s overhauled national statistics institute (Indec) published the country’s new poverty index on 29 September. It does not make for good reading, showing that one in three Argentines live in poverty, significantly higher than suggested by the last poverty figures released in 2013. President Mauricio Macri has said that the new poverty figures are a true reflection of Argentina today and criticised the previous administration led by Cristina Fernández (2007-2015), for seeking to hide the true extent of poverty in the country as a way to validate its unorthodox economic policies and retain the public’s support. But this has sparked controversy, with Fernández’s political supporters accusing the Macri administration of trying to use the poverty figures to its political advantage.
