Chile: Seeking to address the chief public concern

President Michelle Bachelet and her unpopular leftist Nueva Mayoría coalition government continue to struggle to reassure over its efforts at combatting insecurity, which according to a poll released in August 2016 by a local think-tank, Centro de Estudios Públicos (CEP), remains the overriding public concern. That President Bachelet is seeking to address this was indicated in her unveiling of the government’s 2017 state budget proposal last month in which she declared security, along with education and health, one of the top three priorities.
