Jamaica: Murder rate continues to rise despite renewed anti-crime drive

At the end of September, a haul of some 100 brand-new automatic rifles and handguns, along with associated ammunition, was seized in Haiti. Jamaica’s police chief Dr Carl Williams indicated that at least some of the weapons were intended for onward shipment to Jamaica. On 5 October, Williams said that the seizure was not something that the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) could claim credit for, but it was “very happy” about the interception as “it is very possible that many of those weapons would have ended up in Jamaica.”
