ECUADOR: Moreno gets the nod as Correa’s successor

Lenín Moreno, a former vice president (2007-2013), will seek election for the ruling Alianza País (AP) in general elections on 19 February next year. The incumbent vice-president, Jorge Glas, will run alongside him. Moreno and Glas were selected to stand on a joint slate during an AP party convention in Quito. Moreno is renowned for his conciliation, not a characteristic readily associated with President Rafael Correa, who has been in office for close to a decade, and has refused either to brook any dissent within the broad left-wing party that brought him to power or to work constructively with a political opposition he routinely denigrates as a corrupt and mediocre partidocracy.
