Region: Migration flows set to continue

At least one undocumented migrant has given up. Alberto López, a 25-year-old Mexican from Chiapas told a reporter in Nogales after the US elections that it was no longer worth trying to cross the desert into Arizona: after working for two years in the US he had already been deported once. “They are going to arrest all the immigrants. So it is better to stay here with our own people, we’ll survive,” he said. The reality, however, is that tougher border controls, including the construction of walls, are not going to stop the complex push and pull factors affecting migration across the countries of the Western Hemisphere. As if to underline that, 20-year-old Alexi Solano from El Salvador, also in Nogales, said “I don’t care if Trump is president. I’m going to cross, let them build as many walls as they want”.
