Guatemala: Military violence sparks human-rights concerns

Last month Guatemala’s attorney general’s office (AG) announced that 13 members of the armed forces had been arrested, accused of the extra-judicial killing of 25-year-old civilian Héctor Donaldo Contreras Sánchez which took place in December 2015. The announcement once again raises questions about the continued use of the military by the conservative Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación) government led by President Jimmy Morales to assist in citizen security efforts.
