The 13
th Regional Conference on Women, organised by the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac), took place last month in Montevideo, Uruguay. An accompanying document released by Eclac, entitled “Equality and women’s autonomy in the sustainable development agenda”, highlighted, among other concerns, the need to address the continued problem of femicide. This is defined as “the violent death of women based on gender, whether it occurs within the family, by any person, or when it is perpetrated or tolerated by the State, by action or omission”.
