The curious case of the missing Mexican former governors

“How is it possible for the state to recapture [drugs kingpin and prison escape artist] ‘El Chapo’ but not two or three former governors?”, asked Fernando Yunes, a senator in Mexico’s federal senate, during an interview with online magazine Político, published on 23 November. Yunes was referring to the cases of the former governor of Tamaulipas state, Tomás Yarrington (1994-2004), and the former governor of Veracruz state, Javier Duarte (2010-2016), both of whom are wanted in Mexico over corruption charges but whose whereabouts remain unknown. The federal authorities’ failure to find and prosecute the disgraced former governors from the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) is increasingly embarrassing and puts into question their commitment to combating government corruption.
