DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Renewing the JCE

Following this year’s general elections, in which the political opposition in the Dominican Republic (DR) complained about irregularities in the electoral process that allegedly benefited the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), the DR’s senate agreed to renew the leadership of the national electoral authorities (JCE). The new PLD-controlled senate elected a new five-member JCE board asking them to ensure that the next general elections in 2020 were seen to be completely fair and transparent. Yet the opposition remains sceptical, arguing the reshuffle at the JCE is cosmetic and will do little to improve the quality of the country’s democracy.
