Prison massacre sparks human rights crisis

Pope Francis has called for prisoners in Brazil to be treated more humanely following the massacre of dozens of inmates in recent weeks in the country. The Pope’s comments relate to the deadly riot that first broke out at the Complexo Penitenciário (Compaj) prison in the city of Manaus, Amazonas state, on New Year’s day. The incident, which has been attributed to feuding between rival local criminal organisations, left a death toll of 56 people dead and triggered further lethal outbreaks of violence in other Brazilian prisons.
