CDMX assembly approves first constitution

In a historic vote, delegates from Mexico City (CDMX)’s constituent assembly approved the capital’s first ever constitution on 31 January. The CDMX constitution, which encompasses a range of broadly liberal provisions, from allowing abortion to loosening legislation on marihuana consumption, constitutes a victory for leftist parties such as Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) which jointly held the majority in the constituent assembly along with the also-leftist Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD). The PRD Mexico City mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera celebrated the promulgation of the constitution along with the federal interior minister, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong.
