SECURITY | Disarmament in Bajo Aguán. On 1 August the Honduran congress decreed a general disarmament and cancelled gun permits in the Atlantic department of Colón, including the restive Bajo Aguán region, which has been plagued by violence related to land conflicts and drug trafficking and other criminal activities. The government led by President Porfirio Lobo is also planning to reinforce the 600-1,000 strong military and police presence in the area. The Lobo government has discounted imposing a state of siege in the area, for now.
