In brief: Brazil’s industrial production down in monthly terms in December

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures on industrial production, showing a monthly decrease of 0.3% in December. This marks the third consecutive monthly slump in production, following a 0.2% drop in October and a 0.7% decline in November. Of the 25 product categories measured by the Ibge, 15 saw monthly decreases in production, with the largest decreases registered by smoking products (-6.9%), ‘assorted products’ (-5.6%), and leather, travel items, and footwear (-3.4%). Despite the slowdown in the fourth quarter of last year, when industrial production dropped by 0.4% compared with the same period in 2023, annual production levels for the whole of 2024 were up by 3.1% compared with 2023. Industrial production in December 2024 was also up by 1.6% from the same month the previous year.
