In brief: Mexico sends first livestock exports to US following suspension

*Mexico’s Agriculture Minister Julio Berdegué has announced that the first cattle exports have been sent to the US from Agua Prieta, Sonora state, since the US began a phased reopening of its southern ports to Mexican livestock imports on 7 July. Berdegué said that some 900 head of cattle had crossed the border from Sonora to the US town of Douglas, Arizona, the first port to reopen after the US suspended livestock imports from Mexico in May due to the New World Screwworm (NWS) outbreak in the country. “This progress is the result of joint work to regularise the livestock trade and reinforce actions against the screwworm in the south and southeast of the country,” said Berdegué in a social media post. Berdegué also noted that between 24 June and 6 July the number of active cases of the NWS in Mexico had fallen by 22.7%.
