*Uruguay’s state-owned oil company Ancap has announced that it has halted operations at its La Teja refinery in Montevideo, the country’s only oil refinery, to carry out repairs following a
“slight” oil leak. However, it said that supplies for the population would be guaranteed through existing stock and imports of refined products. Ancap stated that a leak was detected on an offshore buoy on 3 August. The area that needs repairing is in a structure located on the seabed that connects the hoses descending from the buoy to the underwater pipeline that transfers the crude oil to the refinery. Ancap announced that technicians are now carrying out the necessary repairs to allow for a return to normal operations, noting that the time required for the work depends on weather conditions, as the structure is located at a depth of 20 metres. It announced it would continue to import refined products until pumping can safely resume.
