CHILE: Lagos replaces 'leading ladies' Bachelet and Alvear

On 29 September, sooner than expected, President Ricardo Lagos conducted the fifth cabinet reshuffle of his term. Though it involved four of his 16 ministers, public attention concentrated on two of them, Michelle Bachelet (defence) and Soledad Alvear (foreign relations) - the two who have long been leading the opinion polls as eventual presidential candidates. Replacing them was partly intended to improve the ruling Concertación's chances in the municipal elections scheduled for this month.
