EMPLOYMENT | Maquiladoras create more jobs. Employment in the maquiladora (assembly) industry increased by 8.2% in July, taking the accumulated increase since the beginning of the year to 3% over the comparable period of 2003. At the end of July the sector was employing 1.13m people. The maquiladoras account for about half of Mexico's export earnings and 90% of what they produce goes to the US. Overall, as we have reported, unemployment has been rising into August [WR-04-38].
