Chile launches reconstruction plan

On 16 April President Sebastián Piñera announced his government's plans to finance reconstruction after the devastating 27 February earthquake. Piñera has yet to give a final figure for how much the government estimates it will have to spend to repair the damage caused by the earthquake. Piñera claims that the cost of rebuilding will be less than the US$30bn worth of estimated damage caused by the 'quake. The package of tax measures he announced on 16 April comes to US$8.4bn.
