SURINAME: Bouterse delays his day in court

Former military strongman Desi Bouterse has been combining procedural legal wrangling with political manoeuvring in a bid to avoid being court-martialled for the murder of 15 members of the opposition in December 1982. So far he has gained a slight delay. Already on the horizon, though, is another incident from the past that may return to haunt him: the 1986 Moiwana massacre, in which 39 people were killed.
