A mild 'La Niña' boosts Paraguay

Development: On 5 April, Paraguay's agricultural biotechnology institute (Inbio) reported that that the current soya harvest is expected to reach 8.4m tonnes, a 13% increase on last year.

Significance: The forecast is a new record, surpassing last year's record 7.4m tonne harvest, thanks in large part to favourable climatic conditions. At the beginning of the year, experts thought that the South American harvest season would be negatively affected by the 'La Niña' phenomenon, which normally results in pronounced drought. However, the dry season has been milder than expected in many areas.
