Alba backs Malvinas claim. The eight-member regional group Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América (Alba) announced this weekend (3-4 February) that it will “study the possibility of [placing] sanctions against the United Kingdom” as part of its backing of Argentina’s call for bilateral talks regarding sovereignty of the Malvinas/Falklands archipelago in the South Atlantic. President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela also said that “if it occurred to the British Empire to attack Argentina militarily, Argentina will not be alone on this occasion”. (Over the weekend the UK daily
The Daily Mail reported that the UK government had deployed a nuclear submarine to protect the Falklands; the UK Ministry of Defence, however, has always refused to comment on the deployment of its nuclear submarines and Buenos Aires says it will not comment until the report is confirmed by a UK government source).
