NICARAGUA: Ortega seeks to tighten his grip

A bid to strengthen “popular democracy”. This is the justification behind a bill that the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government of President Daniel Ortega is planning to send to congress to triple the number of local councillors in the country. The proposal, which is likely to get rubber-stamped by the FSLN-dominated legislature, has raised concerns among civil society groups anxious that it represents the latest attempt by the Ortega government at strengthening control at a local level.
