In Brief – Colombia & Peru

Colombia | General arrested for false demob. On 2 May a magistrate from Bogotá’s superior tribunal ordered the arrest of (ret.) General Lelio Fadúl Suárez Tocarruncho, citing the risk that he might interfere in an investigation relating to the 2006 fake demobilisation of the Cacica la Gaitana front of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) – the same case that turned former peace high commissioner Luis Carlos Restrepo into a fugitive. Suárez Tocarruncho stands accused of embezzlement in favour of a third party; the manufacture, trafficking and bearing of a firearm or munitions of personal defence; the manufacture, trafficking and bearing of weapons reserved for the exclusive use of the armed forces; and litigation fraud. If found guilty, Suárez Tocarruncho could be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
