In Brief - Mexico

Mexico | IFE rules out having to call a national broadcast. On 2 May the general council of the electoral authority (IFE) rejected a request filed by three political parties - the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN); the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD); and the Partido del Trabajo (PT) – ordering the government secretary (Segob) to call a national broadcast, which would force the major TV channels to show the 6 May presidential debate, which coincides with a football match. The petition was defeated by seven votes to two; however, the councillors issued another statement “urging” the television networks, especially TV Azteca, to air the 6 May and 10 June presidential debates.
