HAITI: Lamothe clamps down on former soldiers

Only a fortnight into his job, prime minister Laurent Lamothe has decided to move against the former soldiers and their followers who are demanding the reinstatement of the army. Not only did he ignore the ultimatum they had issued but he clamped down hard on the unauthorised march they tried to stage on 18 May as a show of force. He declared that the existence of armed groups was unacceptable and announced that ‘within weeks’ they would have been removed from the old army premises they had been occupying since last February.
