DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: PLD hangs on to power

It was a tight race, but Danilo Medina of the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) came through on 20 May with a lead of just over four percentage points over his rival, Hipólito Mejía of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD). There was a massive turnout and, though there had been irregularities before and during the contest, most outside observers agreed that these did not invalidate the outcome.
