In Brief - Uruguay

SECURITY | Interpol captures Colombian/Uruguayan group selling IDs to narco-traffickers. On 7 June members of Interpol and of Uruguay’s general directorate of organised crime detained four Colombian and four Uruguayan nationals. The men were apprehended during ‘Operation False’ and six of them were members of a counterfeiting group that obtained legitimate Uruguayan birth certificates and passports for Colombian criminals under false identities – two of the Colombians were customers who had paid US$5,000 each for the documents. The complex operation included: two Uruguayans residing in Buenos Aires; two Uruguayans working for the national civil registry, which issues IDs; and the issuance of a Paraguayan birth certificate and a Uruguayan one for each parent of the individual purchasing the false identity. The latter was then used to secure a Uruguayan passport, which allows the holder to travel to the European Union without a visa. Authorities are still investigating the group’s links in both Paraguay and Argentina.
