Students back on the streets. On 28 June 150,000 students took to the streets of the capital Santiago, according to estimates by Chile’s university students’ confederation (Confech) in the l
atest scheduled protest against ‘for profit education’. The Carabineros put the turnout at a lower 40,000. There were also protests in other cities across the country including Concepción and Valparaíso. According to General Luis Valdés, the head of the Santiago metropolitan area police (carabineros), 250 people were arrested and 20 Carabineros injured in clashes with the protesters, two of them seriously.
