Tierra Caliente is so named for its hot climate. But the recent escalation of violence in this part of the western state of Michoacán has given Tierra Caliente, some 120km from the state capital Morelia, a whole new meaning. The mountainous area of the municipality of Apatzingán, located within Tierra Caliente, is considered the bastion of the drug trafficking organisation (DTO) Los Caballeros Templarios (the Knights Templar) and several of its leaders are believed to be hiding out there.
