Yair Klein, an Israeli mercenary wanted by Colombian authorities for training the paramilitary Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) in the 1980s, has finally made an appearance (albeit via video link from Israel) before the superior tribunal of Bogotá. Though he refused to name specific individuals, his statements about those who promoted his presence in Colombia, both financially and politically, will undoubtedly trigger another chapter of the gruesome parapolitics scandal that has already become the most embarrassing episode of contemporary Colombian politics. This time, however, the scandal won’t stop in the senate and will go all the way to the top office of the land, the presidency.
