Medina boosted by positive figures and opposition disarray

The main opposition in the Dominican Republic has singularly failed to build on public disenchantment over deeply unpopular tax increases pushed through congress by President Danilo Medina late last year. The Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) is engaged in a prolonged and debilitating internal conflict which means Medina’s Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) is not facing a coherent challenge. While the PRD wages its internecine power struggle, Medina is progressing with a series of reforms, including to the police. He has also been buoyed by some positive economic figures.
