Student protests. On 10 March hundreds of teacher training students began a 50km march from El Tejar, a municipality in the department of Chimaltenango, to Guatemala City. Civil society activists and representatives from the Comité de Unidad Campesina (CUC), one of the biggest peasant farmers’ unions, also joined the march. The students are protesting an education reform promoted by the government led by President Otto Pérez Molina, which would increase the length of primary school teacher training programmes to five years, from three previously – a move the students complain
would make training too expensive.
